Using an enterprise social network such as Yammer allows organizations to rapidly share information and boost engagement – and it’s quickly becoming the norm for doing business today. As of 2018, Yammer was used by 85% of Fortune 500 companies worldwide,1 allowing colleagues to engage and work efficiently with one another at the click of a few keystrokes – even when they are scattered throughout different teams, departments, or countries.
But, for communicators, creating engaging, educational and informative content on a weekly – or sometimes daily – basis can be a daunting task. After all, you want to ensure your posts will capture your audience’s attention and stop them from scrolling to read what you have to say.
If you are feeling overwhelmed when face-to-face with a blank update box, don’t worry, you’re likely not alone. Keep these four ideas in mind to create engaging posts your colleagues won’t want to miss:
- Provide a call to action. A successful Yammer post has a clear call to action and allows colleagues to think through their response. Try using a call to action such as, “share your ideas” or “tell us what you think” to provoke engaging responses.
- Use hashtags. By using a hashtag in your post, you create a topic. This is a great way to mark your posts so colleagues can find them later. Colleagues can follow these topics to get direct updates and easily view all posts related to the topic by searching for the dedicated hashtag.
- Mention your colleagues. By typing the ‘@’ symbol, a drop-down list will appear with both people and group names. Select who you would like to mention in the post – you also have the opportunity to “cc”’ colleagues. Using the mention feature will notify the selected individual(s) or group(s), motivating them to engage in the conversation by liking, sharing, or commenting on the post.
- Include a photo. A picture is worth a thousand words. Including a picture is a surefire way to capture your audience’s attention. Your photo can stand alone or include supporting text. Remember, if your colleagues are featured in the photo, mention them!
Once you have the dialogue going with your audience, post regularly to keep the momentum going. Take time to think about the content you would like to share with your colleagues in advance. Be sure to consider the reasoning behind your post, supporting text and materials, publication time and the group you will publish the post to.
Remember, if your goal on Yammer is to engage your colleagues, then you must also be engaged. It’s important to stay active on the platform. Join in on the conversations and groups of others. By remaining involved, and putting these four ideas to work, you’ll be well on your way to having an active audience on Yammer.
